space
Taoyuan city is a special municipality located in northwestern Taiwan (formerly known as Taoyuan county before Dec. 25, 2014) and part of Taipei metropolitan. The city has total area of 1,220 km2 and a population of 2.1 million people including 120 thousands of  international workers, but over 2.5 million people commute to work here. It is home to diverse ethnic groups, namely Hoklo, Hakka, mainlander, Taiwanese aborigine. Zhongli District and Taoyuan District are considered as the center of Taoyuan metropolitan. It is generally thought that it could be divided into Northern Taoyuan and Southern Taoyuan based on ethnic group and living community. Over the last few years, the city has been growing rapidly, with many new residents from other regions and is currently the 5th most populated city in Taiwan. It has also the largest number of international workers due to its promising industrial development.

Geography
Its long and narrow terrain slants from the northwest towards southeast consisting of continuous hills and plateaus. Rising from Shimen Reservoir, Dahan river runs through Daxi District which divides the city in two, the northwestern part and the southeastern part. With the consideration of landforms and geological formations, Taoyuan has many ponds built for irrigation and fish production creating an unique culture of ponds.  Before, communities were generally developed around the ponds which were favorable to agriculture, fishery and stock farming.  Even now, many important buildings are constructed on the ponds that are not in use anymore.

Climate
Taoyuan has a monsoon - influenced humid subtropical climate. A bitter cold and strong north easterly wind starts from late October to March, while the warm south westerly wind begins from May to September accompanied by occasional heavy rainstorms and typhoons which prevail from July to September. The city tends to get more rain in summer; however, it rains more frequent in winter. Its average rainfall is around 1,500 to 2,000 mm (2,000 to 4,000 mm in the mountain area). The average annual humidity is around 89 % and the average temperature is about 23°C, 29 °C in summer and 16 °C in winter. The extreme low temperature in winter has often been recorded in open seaside areas, such as Xinwu District.

Transportation
Taoyuan city is the 3rd most populous city in the northern Taiwan and forms metropolitan “Taoyuan-Zhongli”with its neighboring satellite cities which brings heavy traffic to the area. Constructed in 1970, Taiwan Taoyaun International Airport is the largest airport and the busiest air entry hub. Moreover, the road system is well-planned with three highways passing by along with convenient railway service including Taiwan Railway and Taiwan High Speed Railway (THSR) that has a station in Chinpu, Zhongli District. The Airport Metro system is also under construction at the moment.
